Roundup of Colorado’s Recreation

No matter where you are located in Colorado, you can find something amazing to do! In this post, we’ll cover a variety of activities you can enjoy and provide some valuable resources to plan your next Colorado excursion.

Get Outside

Stargazing—Colorado’s dark skies provide some amazing stargazing opportunities. Several cities in Colorado, including Norwood, Westcliffe and Silver Cliff, are designated “Dark Sky Communities” by the International Dark Sky Association

Bike Trails—Biking is a great way to explore Colorado, and the state has many mountain biking trails, scenic byways and bike paths to try. If you’d like to explore Colorado’s biking opportunities, head to https://www.bicyclecolorado.org/

14ers—Colorado has 58 mountains over 14,000 feet (aka 14ers). Checkout https://www.14ers.com/ is a great resource for maps, routes and information so you can plan and prepare for your epic hike. 

National Parks—Colorado is lucky to have 12 National Parks and National Monuments, 41 Colorado State Parks and millions of acres of National Forest and other public lands. Rocky Mountain National Park is a well-known national park located in Northern Colorado that features 300 miles of hiking trails, wildflowers, wildlife and starry nights. 

Campsites—Colorado offers excellent camping throughout the state. Believe it or not, Colorado State Parks offers more than 3,900 campsites, 50 cabins and yurts located all over Colorado. 

Festivals—Summers in Colorado feature all sorts of festivals. Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Colorado State Fair, Greeley Stampede, a Taste of Colorado...these are only some of the well-known festivals offered in Colorado. Many Southern Colorado towns have festivals as well, from BBQ to brews to classic cars.

Sports

Coloradoans love their sports teams!

 

  • Denver Broncos—The Denver Broncos are a professional American football franchise that plays at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. 

  • Colorado Rockies—The Colorado Rockies are an American professional baseball team based in Denver, and they play at Coors Field in Downtown Denver. 

  • Colorado Avalanche—The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver. They compete in the National Hockey League as a member of the Central Division of the Western Conference.

Airports

Colorado is lucky to have several airports. Denver International Airport (DIA) is an international airport that serves metropolitan Denver and the front range. The Colorado Springs Airport is the second busiest commercial in Colorado. Colorado also has smaller Colorado airports in Aspen, Telluride, Grand Junction, Eagle/Vail, Gunnison, Montrose, Durango and Hayden.  

Military Bases

Colorado has a few military bases in Southern Colorado: 

  • Fort Carson is a United States Army installation located near Colorado Springs.

  • Peterson Airforce Base is a U.S. Air Force Base that shares an airfield with the adjacent Colorado Springs Municipal Airport

  • The Broadmoor is a legendary destination resort in Colorado Springs with picturesque mountain views, luxurious accommodations and legendary service.
  • The Colorado Springs Great Wolf Lodge offers both indoor water park fun and dry-land experiences for your entire family. The 84-degree indoor water park has plenty of rides, slides and even a wave pool. 

  • Great Sand Dunes Lodge in Mosca, CO is located at the foot of the majestic Sangre De Cristo mountain range and offers views of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the nearby 14,000 foot peaks.

Road Trips

If you want to hit the road, there are several vibrant cities within driving distance: 

  • Dallas—driving distance from Walsenburg to Dallas is about 9 hours and 35 minutes (632 miles)

  • Fort Worth—driving distance from Walsenburg to Amarillo is about 9 hours (606 miles)

  • Amarillo—driving distance from Walsenburg to Amarillo is about 4 hours (267.8 miles)
