There’s no denying Silverthorne’s appeal. The Rocky Mountain peaks and the waters of the Blue River and Dillon Reservoir surround this lovely little town, offering plenty of hiking, biking, rafting, and fishing. And in the winter months, you are central to some of the best skiing and snowboarding around, with Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Loveland, Copper Mountain, and Breckenridge all within fifteen miles. In addition, Silverthorne boasts great shopping, restaurants, and breweries; and the local commitment to arts and culture produces exciting theatre, music, and visual arts. Leadville is the most affordable choice on our list, but you definitely get the most for your money in this historical mountain town with awe-inspiring views. This frontier town has a rich, mining history and a colorful main street. Sitting at more than 10,000 feet above sea level, the winters can be brutal, but the outdoor amenities are vast. Mts. Elbert and Massive attract the serious hikers, but there are also mellower hikes and lakes to explore. In the winter, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling are the way to go. Year-round, the Wild West history is abundant, and who wouldn’t say yes to a drink in a haunted saloon!? Of course, there is yummy food and beer, but the locals pride themselves on locally owned businesses, and that lends to the close-knit, community feel.

Salida sits between the Sangre de Cristo, Mosquito, and Sawatch mountain ranges; and the Arkansas River runs through town, which has the largest National Historic District of any town in Colorado. Additionally, Salida has managed to avoid the annual tourist mob, maintaining its marvelous, small-town feel. Things to do include some of the best whitewater rafting in the country, hiking, biking, fly-fishing, and skiing, but the hot springs put the cherry on top of a long day in the great outdoors! The walkable downtown is rife with eateries, bars, and breweries, as well as art galleries and history. You know what? I think we’ll just move there right now.
