Colorado Weather

“If you don’t like the weather in Colorado, then wait five minutes.” Colorado’s weather often changes quickly, and it keeps you on your toes. Despite the quick changes and seasons, Colorado’s climate is truly amazing! The state gets more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Colorado gets more annual hours of sun than Miami and San Diego!
Diverse Geography

Like the diverse weather, Colorado has diverse geography of alpine mountains, valleys, high plains, deep canyons, mesas, forests, rivers and deserts--each with different climates. Western Colorado is mostly mountainous with a few desert lands while the Front Range’s urban corridor sits close to the Rocky Mountains. North Colorado consists of high plains and mountains, while South Colorado is a mix of deserts and mountains.

Winter Conditions

Winter conditions vary depending on where you’re located in Colorado. The Continental Divide splits the state into western and eastern parts, each with different climates. Front range winters are typically mild with an average daily high temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Colorado sees an average of 16.5 inches of precipitation per year (8 at lower elevations and 23 at higher elevations), while mountain resorts receive an average of 300 inches of snow per year. Winter days can even reach 60 degrees. Snow doesn't stay on the ground long on the front range so many golf courses and patios stay open all year.

Mild Temperatures

In summer, Colorado enjoys low relative humidity so the days are sunny and the evenings are cool and comfortable. In Denver, the average daily high temperature in August is a mild 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Average humidity is 33 percent. The mild weather is due in part to the city's altitude: 5,280 feet above sea level, or exactly a mile high.
